Tooth Bleeding

16 Oct 2020

It may appear to you that your tooth is bleeding when in fact it’s your gums bleeding. But what causes your gums to bleed?

Gum bleeding may be the sign of a serious dental issue or something as simple as needing to improve your brushing and flossing techniques.

What Causes Gums to Bleed?

The only way to properly work out why your gums are bleeding is to make an appointment with one of our friendly qualified dentists here at Hawthorn East Dental, who will consult with you and in many cases, take x-rays to fully capture the condition of your oral health.

This will help to identify anything that is not visually obvious from the first look inside your mouth.

Generally, the build-up of plaque at the gum line (Gingivitis) is the leading cause of bleeding gums.

Gums may bleed for the following reasons:

  • You are brushing too hard or you are not using a soft toothbrush.
  • You are pregnant and hormonal changes are making your gums are inflamed
  • Your gums are adjusting to your new flossing routine
  • Gingivitis (gum disease)
  • Blood disorders
  • Medications
  • Infections
  • Vitamin C deficiency
  • Injury
  • Leukemia
  • Ill fitting dental appliances such as dentures.
  • Vitamin K deficiency.

How to Treat Bleeding Gums

The treatment for bleeding gums will depend on the cause. Something as minor as correcting your brushing and flossing is easily discussed. If you need greater oral care then our dentist will discuss this with you.

To ensure your dental health is optimal, ensure you have a regular dental check-up scheduled so your teeth are professionally cleaned. This will help keep plaque away and therefore gingivitis.

If the condition is more serious it may require you to consult with your other health care professionals as this may require other treatment.

How to Avoid Gingivitis

Looking after your teeth with regular brushing and flossing is a great place to start. Your oral health is directly impacted by your physical health. Ensure you incorporate healthy foods into your diet that support nutritional balance and strengthen your teeth.
