Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is a popular cosmetic dental procedure. It is one of the quickest, simplest and non-invasive ways to brighten your smile.
It can be done at any age with proven results and very little side effects.

What we offer

At Hawthorn East Dental, we have the highly popular SDI Pola Whitening kits.
The extremely successful PolaDay At-Home Teeth Whitening is a product we use ourselves and recommend. At 9.5% concentration, this PolaDay kit is used 30 mins a day for outstanding and long-lasting results.

The Science behind it all

To understand how teeth whitening works, we must take a minute to meet the enemy: STAINS.
An outer layer known as the enamel protects the surface of your teeth. It’s hard, white in colour, semi-transparent but also quite porous. When you eat, smoke, drink wine or coffee, another layer of foreign material gradually forms over the enamel. This is known as pellicle film. Some of this film may be removed with abrasive toothpaste such as “whitening toothpastes” and during a dental scale and clean. However, as this pellicle layer sits on your teeth for months and years, foreign materials starts to penetrate enamel through its pores.

This is where true whitening systems come in. The whitening gel is a bleaching material that travels through the tooth enamel and breaks apart the staining compounds.

Most teeth whitening systems use one of two compounds: carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide, commonly used to bleach your hair. The concentrations, for all whitening systems available, are relatively low and proven safe to use on teeth.

Other times, tooth staining and discolouration may be due to other things like:

  • Tooth decay
  • Dental Trauma
  • Antibiotic staining
  • Tooth malformation
  • Age
  • Grinding / Excessive wear and tear

This is why it’s important that we assess your teeth and discuss whether whitening is suitable for you.
Other interesting facts to note:

  • The most common tooth shade in the general population ranges from A2-A3, which isn’t that bright.
  • Larger bulky teeth in the mouth, such as the canine tooth, often appear more “yellow”. This is due to larger bulk of dentin that’s partially visible through the enamel layer. Dentin is much darker and more yellow in colour than enamel
  • As we age, adult teeth become darker due to changes in the mineral structure of the tooth.
